Last updated on November 27th, 2018 at 04:03 pm

Planning a big purchase or looking for the perfect gift? Find out if you should hit the stores this Black Friday … or if you better think twice before checking off your list. Find the best in-store deals with this handy guide and scroll to the end to learn how to avoid the duds.

1. Game Consoles
The hottest new game consoles come with a hefty price tag, so waiting for a sale is wise. For the best value, look for discounted consoles or bargains on bundles that combine consoles with popular games or accessories this Black Friday.

2. Televisions
Televisions are a Black Friday staple, and many big-box retailers sell them in the form of doorbusters. While low-priced TVs sell out quickly, some stores will honor the discounted price online, so do your research. Just keep in mind that stores are likely to discount slow-selling or lower-end models.

3. Electronics
In addition to TVs, keep an eye out for discounts on laptops, tablets, smart phones and fitness trackers. Last year, some retailers offered free gift cards with a qualifying installment-plan phone purchase. Also check out deals on professionally refurbished electronics.

4. Major Home Appliances
If you need to purchase a major kitchen appliance, Black Friday’s the perfect time. Keep a lookout for huge savings on washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers and more. Often, stores continue these sales throughout the month.

5. Smaller Appliances
Keep an eye out for mixers, coffee makers, blenders and vacuum cleaners. Some smaller appliances may run $15, $10 or as little as $5 on Black Friday. While the quality may not be the greatest, it could be worth it to buy an infrequently used item such as fondue pot or an appliance for a college student. Now’s also a good time to buy cookware sets.

6. DVDs
Although streaming media subscriptions are all the rage these days, DVDs still make popular holiday gifts. And watching movies as a family remains a favorite holiday-season tradition. Look for heavy discounts on family-friendly films and new releases.
