Baseball is full of unusual terms. If you’ve ever watched a game on TV or listened on the radio, you may have heard the announcer weave an audible tapestry that, to the untrained ear, sounds like a bunch of nonsense.

They’re speaking the language of baseball and it’s been passed down from generation to generation. It’s part of the allure of “America’s pastime.”

The thing is, a lot of baseball nomenclature sounds good enough to eat. See if you can guess these ridiculous food-related baseball terms.

  1. What fun to learn this kind of stuff! Do any announcers really still use expressions like this anymore…or are they staples of the game and the average person would hear them used in just about any game..ball game I mean??

  2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but hot dog is applied to players who like to show off: example, Mr. October, Reggie Jackson. Also, I believe there is a term like “cutting the pie”(?) that applies to a fancy flip between the SS and 2B around the bag for a force out or a double play.
