Having a football party at home with friends and family can sometimes be just as fun as going to the game itself. For one, you don’t have to deal with the parking, rowdy fans, and unpredictable weather (looking at you New England). You get to enjoy the game from the comfort of your home, with all your favorite comfort foods. While it’s fun to indulge, there are plenty of ways to host a healthy football party. Use the tips below and no one will even notice the healthy twist to your party!
- Create a food-free area. Create a space where your guests can mingle without food around. Research shows that when food is nearby and visible, it increases your chances of eating that food. Keeping snacks in another room will help everyone save calories and curb mindless eating in front of the TV.
- Offer healthier food first. Instead of bringing out the nachos and wings first, put out healthier snacks such as vegetables and dip or hummus for the first part of the game.
- Give the classics a healthy twist. A football party wouldn’t be complete without nachos, wings, and chips and dip. There are plenty of ways to make these snacks healthy. For nachos, swap out tortilla chips for baked sweet potato chips and pile the toppings on. Cook buffalo-marinated chicken tenders instead of wings. Use nonfat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for creamy dips.
- Cut down on your dish size. Instead of serving chips in a big bowl, trade it in for a medium sized bowl. Same goes for dips, serve them in a small bowl and you can always refill if needed. Your guests will be less inclined to take more food if it’s served in a small or medium bowl. The smaller sized bowls and plates trick people into thinking they are taking more food than they actually are.
